This week has been all over the map for me, musically. But I finally listened to the new Mitski album, Be The Cowboy, and I’m hooked. I started listening to Mitski with her last album, Puberty 2. Since then, she went on a massive world tour opening for Lorde and Run the Jewels. Her writing has the effortless ability to be expansive and universal, and intimate and personal at the same time. She blends rock, pop, and dance music to create a magical space that makes you want to dance and cry at the same time. This feeling is captured beautifully on her new single, “Nobody.”

So recently I have been doing some research on wacky fantastical visuals for an upcoming project. That rabbit hole down the internet took me to a music video - “Life’s a bitch” made by Mexican director Matthew Castellanos for a band on the rise by the name of Radiant Children.
Radiant Children is a new London three piece band that advance the current wave of contemporary R&B Soul/ types like Goldlink, Kaytranada, and Kali Uchis ( who I mentioned last week) whom are trying to blur the line between nostalgia and forward thinking exploration. Their 17 minute E.P. appropriately titled “Tryin’” is a breezy listen that takes you a higher place of peace and relaxation that is attainable even on the toughest of days. I recommend listening to this E.P. having a warm shower after a hard days work.

I started watching Netflix’s Ozark recently, just so I could stop the voices constantly ask/telling me “OMG, its so sooo good, why havent you gotten to it yet? Is everything okay? Have you updated your Roku player?!”
Almost as if I had forgotten to take this collective exhale while people stand around me baffled and confused as to why I haven’t turned blue and passed out. I don’t have to tell you the social pressures and complexities of staying up to date with New Releases with complete disregard for ones own personal health i.e., Blurry vision, UTI’s, Insomnia..
Im watching it, and realizing whats making this for me is the soundtrack. Its the perfect accent and punctuation for this show. Its Dark paranoia is reflected by Decks Dark by Radiohead. Its a trip without the pesky hallucinations like Grab the Money ( And Go ) by Black Angels but it always finds the fun and dark humor in itself like Nobody Speak by DJ Shadow Feat. Run the Jewels.
Ozark’s soundtrack for seasons 1 and now 2 can be found on Spotify.
