This week (and most of last week tbh) I have been listening to the album Silk Canvas by Vanjess. Vanjess is a duo of Nigerian-American sisters, and this album is dripping with 1990s R&B influences. It’s smooth, it’s lush, and it is insanely repeatable. I recommend the whole album, but the track I keep coming back to is “Touch The Floor.”

As summer slowly comes to an end I thought I’d take some time to look back and reflect on some artists and groups that have grabbed my attention.
This week’s artist is Kali Uchis.
She is a Colombian/American soul songstress who at 24 years of age has already had an eventful life living back and fourth between northern Virginia and Pereira, Colombia in the early 90’s to then living out of her Subaru Forester, making her demo in her mid to late teens. Soon enough she met up with retro soul band The Dap Kings who assisted in cultivating her wavy bossanova sound and inserting that vibe into her debut album, Isolation.
This album features additional contributions from Thundercat, Bootsy Collins, Tyler the Creator, and Reykon.I recommend listening to this album with a rum based drink while you just contemplate the setting of the sun.
